As heatwaves around the world bring once more to our attention the effects of climate change, technologies like cool roofs may seem to offer some help. However, in moderate and cold climates their usefulness remains limited. A new generation of adaptive roofing technologies takes the cool roof a step further, using materials able to change their reflectance and thermal emittance properties seasonally. Researchers from ETH Zurich have devised a solution that make roofs sweat. Thanks to a new synthetic mat, buildings can cool down without using electricity.
