Staten Island Ferry St. George Terminal: Design-Build & Resident Engineering Inspection Services for the Rehabilitation of the Ramps
Gedeon GRC Consulting provided resident engineering inspection services in connection with the design-build for the rehabilitation of the St. George Staten Island Ferry Terminal Ramps in Staten Island.

The project consisted of the rehabilitation of 8 ramps; demolition and reconstruction of the North Ramp access to parking lots and Richmond County Bank Ballpark; architectural improvements to the bus gates and canopies; improvements to pedestrian access and creation of a bikeway and parking facility for cyclists. Work scope also included refurbishing the flute sculpture, painting all structures, installation of new drainage and paving the North Municipal Parking Lot.

Project elements involved the following tasks:

·     Clean and paint steel columns, framing, exposed steel, and patch concrete where needed

·     Repair spalled abutment breast wall, bridge seat, and pedestals

·     Remove existing superstructure and replace with new structure

·     Remove encasement from bottom flanges of pedestrian ramps and concrete encasement from columns and steel framing

·     Replace all fascia and selective interior stringer connection angles

·     Replace steel railing with concrete barrier and steel bearings at both abutments with elastomeric bearings

·     Replace deck drainage system and concrete deck and asphalt overlay with single course deck

·     Replace existing deck joints, seal deck and construct sidewalk on both sides of bridge

·     Repair approach sidewalk and masonry wall

·     Construct new ramp on alignment parallel toRichmond County Stadium and demolish existing ramp

·     Replace bus waiting area islands and kiosks

·     Re-inspect exposed steel columns and framing and repair as needed

·     Replace roof and eliminate stairs to Ramp B and sidewalk below

·     Install pigeon deterrent systems

·     Perform miscellaneous steel repair and modify/repair structural framing as needed

Construction activities were carried out day and night and at several locations simultaneously; and some tasks were carried out during the night and weekends as well to due to railroad restrictions.

In addition, this contract also involved Maintenance of Traffic (MPT), training, agency coordination, and ensuring that all records were kept in accordance with the Manual for Uniform Record Keeping (MURK).
