Electric highway charges trucks in Germany

This week Germany announced the opening of the first stretch of electric highway. The 10 km (6 miles) tract is located near South of Frankfurt on the A5 Autobahn and it will allow hybrid trucks to recharge as they drive through.

The project has been designed by Siemens AG while Scania, Volkswagen’s truck division, is providing the trucks. The technology used is similar to trains, with trucks linking up to electrified wires as they move.
