British National Grid optimizes output from renewables by using AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning are going to help the National Grid to predict how much energy the United Kingdom will collect from turbines and solar panels based on the weather forecast. Their new AI prediction models of solar forecasting have improved by over 30% thanks to a partnership with the Alan Turing Institute.

The project is similar to a collaboration between Google and AI firm Deep Mind, which is also using AI technologies to better predict energy output from wind farms. Google can predict output from its wind farms 36 hours in advance, allowing the tech giant to bid to allocate power to the grid in advance.
